Greetings

We are pleased to present the works of SETSUO KANO through a new approach called YOHEN, offering a contemporary expression of Japanese aesthetics that resonates across generations.

Drawing on his experience as a collector of Japanese antiquities—particularly Edo-period paintings—Kano creates works that convey the world of MUJO (impermanence), a core concept of Japanese aesthetics. The family of Ernest Fenollosa expressed deep admiration for his work, and his paintings were exhibited at the Guest House of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, as works representing Japan.

YOHEN is a new form of artwork created by extracting a portion from the original painting. If the fusuma-sized originals are haute couture, YOHEN may be considered prêt-à-porter—not a fragment, but a separate work that brings the world of Kano’s originals closer to the viewer.

Kano’s latest series, Indra’s Fifteen Gods, introduces deities deeply connected to nature and human life. Rendered using his distinctive technique of NUKI (the art of omission), these works are presented through the YOHEN approach.

In today’s world of rapid production and consumption, this exhibition reveals the astonishing power of human expression created with paper, black ink, and brush. We hope that encountering the YOHEN of the Fifteen Gods of Indra will broaden your worldview and enrich your life.
