Message from Organizer "The Power to Imagine the Invisible"
The Japanese have long sensed the presence of gods and spirits in nature—cultivating a culture rooted in awareness of the invisible. This rich imaginative power blossomed into a refined popular culture during the Edo period, bringing depth and beauty to daily life and leaving a profound impact on the world.
Yet today, as efficiency is prized under the forces of technological innovation and globalization, we seem to be losing the creative spirit—and the openness to nurture it—that once defined the Japanese sensibility.
The works of Setsuo Kano, grounded in the ever-changing concept of mujo (impermanence), are all untitled. Each invites the viewer to engage with the piece through their own imagination—a quiet appeal to rediscover inner vision.
This exhibition, held for the first time in Tokyo, offers a rare opportunity to encounter the world of Setsuo Kano, who explores the aesthetics that flourished in the Edo period through a wide range of expressive forms. We invite you to come close and experience firsthand the quiet power of the invisible that lies at the heart of Japanese culture.
